The work of Alexey Terenin invites the viewer on a spiritual voyage infused with a magical enthrallment. He marries the severity of his architectural lines to a dreamlike poetry, creates a universe of his own, filled with phantasm and mysterious figures. This world of dreamy silence, reminiscent of the work of Balthus, is strangely familiar, as though Terenin has tapped into subconsciousness of a time and place we seem to have met before.

Dear friend,

King’s Gallery would like to invite you to Fotanian Open Studios 2012, a
major annual event in the local art scene.

Fotanian Open Studios Programme 伙炭藝術工作室開放計劃; brings together a
vibrant community of artists and art lovers who transformed industrial lofts
into art studios. Visitors get to go behind the scene and explore their
creative works, which encompass a wide array of media, including paintings,
sculptures, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking, installations, photographic
and video works.

This year, King’s Gallery will continue to show exciting works of
contemporary Russian artists:

Alexey Terenin
The work of Alexey Terenin invites the viewer on a mystical voyage infused with a magical
fascination. With great boldness he marries the rigour of his architectural lines to a dreamlike poetry
to create a universe of his own filled with phantom and enigmatic figures.

Olga Trushnikova
The artist organically combines the principles of Russian folk art and traditions of postmodernism.
Simple plots become internal compositional complexity and multi-color palette. Picturesque scenes
merge into pieces in bright colorful fabric, like a patchwork quilt.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Opening Schedule:
Date: January 7, 8, 14 and 15 (Sat/Sun)
Time: 2:00 – 8:00pm
Venue: Unit 619-620, Block A, Wah Luen Industrial Center, 15-21 Wong Chuk
Yeung Street, Fo Tan, Shatin

About the artist

Pavel Antipov was born near Moscow (Hot’kovo) in 1979. He entered the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint-Petersburg, the faculty of painting in 2000.
It is painting that is the most comfortable way for the artist to speak with the viewers and to talk to himself. By his artworks he tries to tell us about important vital things, about his emotions, moreover he gives the viewer philosophical questions for considering. From Pavel’s point of view, the most important goal of his art is the representation of interconnection of the simple and difficult, which surrounds us in our ordinary life. Pavel is aimed to give the maximum simple images which embodies difficult philosophical themes.
His artistic style was formed due to the studying of the art decorative sources in Abramcevskiy college, the academic style of painting in the Academy of Arts and the coloring and forms of icons. The compilation of the different artistic schools and Pavel’s comprehension of art have formed the recognizable author’s style.

Melnikova Maria, art critic

“… For me, painting – this is the language in which the most interesting to me to engage in dialogue with the audience and himself. His works, I’m trying to tell you about the important things for me, to convey certain emotions, ask questions of concern to me.
From my point of view, the main goal of my work – to show the relationship of simple and complex environment in all of us everyday, to give a complex philosophical themes as mere formal incarnation. “
Pavel Antipov

The creative style of the artist Paul Antipov, emerged from the study of decorative arts at the beginning, the core of the art school Abramtsevo School, received the Academy of Arts academic manner of writing, coloring and shaping of Russian icons. The combination of different schools, supplemented by searching for creative ways of meeting the just as Paul Antipov understand the purpose of art, formed a recognizable architectural style that allows the artist to show in the tradition of the academic school inspires its reality not literally, but as the images created through symbols, metaphors and allegories.

Artistic features that distinguish the artist’s works are subtle gradations of shades that reflect the author’s studies in the field of color, form and conventionality-textured planar interpretation.
Maria Melnikova, art

Pavel Antipov has already passed a certain way to find their own artistic manner, experimenting with line, color, and “trying on” various styles of the past. The artist’s work hard to fit in some direction. He deliberately opposes itself to the field of contemporary art, contemporary art, and at the same time, far away from academic traditions. Using the techniques of Symbolism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Suprematism.
Charles Anastasia
art, Department of Contemporary Art of the State Russian Museum

His works are in collections of the Beijing National Gallery, Washington National Gallery, in numerous private collections in Russia and abroad.

In 2010, Paul was nominated for the International Antipov prize.

Birth of CoBrA

World War II left behind a lot of misery and desolation, but it releases “a breath of freedom and a desire to create” in very many artists, told me J. Noiret in an interview held during the celebrations of 60th anniversary of CoBrA. In this climate of newfound freedom, and in opposition to Surrealism of A. Breton theorizing and too “intellectualist,” the painter Asger Jorn Group Experimental Danish painters Karel Appel, Corneille Guillaume van Beverloo Constant Nieuwenhuys and the Dutch Experimental Group, and poets Joseph Noiret and Christian Dotremont surrealistic-revolutionary group in Belgium co-sign On November 8, 1948 a paper written by A.Jorn and C. Dotremont. This manifesto entitled “The case was heard,” ironically refers to the Surrealist manifesto of the movement entitled “The case is heard.” This group of young artists wants to undermine the myth of the artist “super-man” and the rigid rules of classic art that defend the institutions. For them, every man is an artist. They refuse the idea that art is “an activity sterile and dogmatic.” They want to develop a free Art theory, based on instinct and popular practices, and achieve a participation of all creation. CoBrA was born.

The name of the CoBrA movement stands for “Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam “the names of the towns of origin of the founding members. They express their will by this choice internationalist. In 1949, one year after the founding of the group, Christian Dotremont, which is the great organizer of CoBrA, decide to also add to CoBrA the IAE, the “International experimental artists’ desire to strengthen the diversity and openness, and their desire to integrate the group of artists from different backgrounds and cultures. CoBrA and also opposes the dominant cultural role of Paris at the time. Ignored at first, the proliferation of exhibitions and publications CoBrA artists soon earned them the backlash: “We were treated anarchists, conspiracy, Bolsheviks, Communists, but (…)… our fight was a fight art. “(Cornelius)

The word is given: not having a slogan! CoBrA artists want to think outside the box and experiment. The desire to CoBrA is to artistic practice accessible to all and to resurface the authentic cultures apparently missing. The traditional art and folklore, particularly Scandinavian tales and legends, will inspire many. Artistic creation is not an activity reserved for the elite but for all practical. Very politically active, the CoBrA artists also broke with the Communists who opt for socialist realism.

“We have seen, we, our ways of living, working, feeling were common, we agree on the practical and we refuse to indoctrinate an artificial theoretical unity. We work together, we will work together. ”(The case was heard, CoBrA).

On an artistic level, CoBrA also objects from side to geometric abstraction, which for them has no connection with reality and the human, and the other extras; they are too directed to the aesthetics and intellectualism. They challenge and question the concept of “Beauty” in the work of art, promoting intent, jet instinctive and experimentation rather than technical research to perfect an aesthetic form. Art must be spontaneous and experimental as the art of children and mentally ill.

CoBrA and experimentation
The CoBrA artists want to discover and explore lands unknown to them, push the traditional boundaries of artistic creation. Activities of experiments and experiences form the collective body of the CoBrA creation. The important thing is to express themselves freely through colors, materials, techniques and words. No matter if you’re a painter, photographer, architect, poet, etc.. The important thing is to speak freely. The CoBrA reverse roles: the artists write, writers paint, painters photographed, etc.. The tables group CoBrA give life to characters sometimes close to primitive art. They also invent creatures and critters inspired by children’s drawings or insane. The bestiary is also borrow Tales and Fables traditional Nordic.During three years, they work intensively, alone or with others (works for four hands).Dialogue and communication are essential for the successful completion of the company CoBrA. The number of participants grew up, it is important to remember and to question the motives regularly and wants founders. Extensive correspondence will be exchanged between the main organizers of CoBrA members. They also organize workshops (10 rue de la Paille in Brussels), panel discussion (Saturday of Atlan in Paris), exhibition brings together international artists and publish booklets and magazines.

CoBrA and editing
Despite extreme poverty and lack of resources, they print many journals (CoBrA, Little CoBrA, the tiny CoBrA, the Library CoBrA) to convey their ideas, visions, and thoughts about art and the World . CoBrA magazine is in turn coordinated by the various partner countries. This review reflects the complex, rich and international movement. In all issues of the journal, we read articles, poems, philosophical essays and aesthetic, and there are photographs and reproductions of many experimental artists.

The end of CoBrA. A new beginning
In the words of C. Dotremont, CoBrA was “the common market of misery and exuberance.” Deprivation, disease and strife put an end to the group 6 November 1951 with the latest international exhibition of experimental art held at the Museums of Fine Arts in Liege. This exhibition has been very little to do with the original spirit of CoBrA, dismissing writers and inviting new artists to the concerns and different backgrounds, but it can once again bring together international artists of talent want to shake the vision of an art still very institutional. Some CoBrA artists continue to live the spirit of the movement after its dissolution.
They continue to create works “four hands” as, among others, Cornelius and C.Dotremont (“bird paradise dream real,” 1972),
J. Noiret and S. Vandercam (“In the smell of fresh bread in the morning …”, 1983), P. Alechinsky and K. Call (“Woman she,” 1977), C. Dotremont and
K. Call (“Writing black mixed colors on white,” 1977), or Hugo Claus and S.Vandercam (“The Raft of the Medusa”, 1964).
CoBrA has been a complex and challenging experience, full of experiments and inventions (“logograms,” “works for four hands,” fantastic bestiary, etc.) The movement lasted only three years, but this group of young artists involved has left a strong influence in the history of art, and ideas still inspire many artists and artist collectives. Exhibitions and retrospectives were held regularly around the world to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the movement. Numerous books, catalogs and magazines analyzing, describing and celebrating the CoBrA artists and their achievements have been published to date. In the words of Corneille again last year during the celebrations of 60th anniversary of CoBrA in Brussels, “CoBrA was a real headache.” CoBrA was more than a movement or a collective of artists. It was a mindset and a lifestyle. Michel Ragon wrote about it: “Cobra is a less likely chance of a happy meeting.”

Sunday, September 5, 2010, William Cornelius Van Beverloo died. It now rests in the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise (FR) alongside Vincent Van Gogh.

Cornelius is one of the greatest masters of painting of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Co-founder in 1948 of the COBRA movement, he will constantly throughout his career to experiment, to invent and imagine freely.

Known worldwide as the painter of Color, Bird, Woman, Nature and music are the themes of his masterly work. Lord humanist and lover of life, he told us once again:

“In my long life as a painter, I just lived with passion, and if it again, I would do the same thing. In my life, I made a colorful beautiful day.”

William Cornelius Van Beverloo was born in 1922 of Dutch parents in Liège (BE), where he spent many years of his childhood. In 1943, after a short stay at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam where he is teaching too academic, it abandons the traditional curriculum to experiment and express themselves freely. Unfortunately the war broke out and casts its shadow toll on the world. Against all odds and despite the hell of war, Cornelius continued to paint. Upon release, he decided to forget this terrible time and embraces freedom with both hands.
In 1947 he was invited to exhibit his paintings in Budapest. He discovered the works of Klee and P. J. encounter Doucet. Back in the Netherlands, he created in 1948 with K. Appel and Constant, the Experimentelle Groep Amsterdam and Reflex. On November 8 of that year, as opposed to the surrealism of A. Breton too theorizing, Corneille with his two companions Dutch, Belgian artists C. Dotremont and J. Noiret and Danish artist A. Jorn, based in Paris formed the group COBRA.

This experimental art movement became one of the most important movements after the war. COBRA is a movement or a collective of artists. It’s a mindset and a lifestyle. Michel Ragon wrote about it: “COBRA is less likely that a happy occasion for meetings.” The group COBRA gives life to characters sometimes close to primitive art, folk art inspired by mainly northern. The bestiary also borrowed Tales and Fables traditional Danish. COBRA artists also invent creatures and critters inspired by children’s drawings or insane. The important thing for Cornelius and his compatriots is to express themselves freely through colors, materials and words, without rules or constraints. Corneille painted mostly, but his plastic works are often accompanied by poems. For three years, “Cobra” working alone or collectively, intensively. They create unique works, many print publications (COBRA, Little Cobra, the tiny COBRA) and organize workshops (10 rue de la Paille in Brussels), discussion meetings (on Saturdays from Atlan in Paris) and Exhibition brings together international artists. Deprivation, disease and strife terminate COBRA November 6, 1951 with their latest international exhibition of experimental art held at the Museums of Fine Arts in Liege. As so well expressed C. Dotremont, COBRA was “the common market of misery and exuberance.” This exhibition has been very little to do with the spirit COBRA, inviting artists to the concerns and different backgrounds (eg Giacometti), but it can once again shake the vision of an art too institutional.

After the group disbanded, every player COBRA follows a personal path, keeping contact with each other. They sometimes continue to create works “four hands”, as J. Noiret T. Wolvecamp and carry out joint projects. Cornelius works extensively with Hugo Claus, one of his closest friends and collaborators COBRA, providing the texts of the latter drawings, engravings or lithographs, and vice versa. The list of artists with whom Corneille worked very long because he is an artist of extreme generosity, always eager for novelty.

From 50 years, having already immigrated to Paris, he began exhibiting in major galleries such as Galerie Maeght in Paris (1950), Colette Allendy Gallery (1954), Galerie Ariel (1961), and in New York in the Lefebre Gallery (1962). It also outlines in museums like the Museum of Curacao (1954), the Palace of Fine Arts, Brussels, Belgium (1956) or at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands (1956 and 1960). Since then, his works are exhibited and referenced in the largest museums in the world.

Internationally known for his paintings and drawings, Corneille throughout his career and experienced discovered new medium for expression. What counts for him is “creativity comes first!” He writes with great talent, poetry, art critics. His Journal of the Tower (1976), accompanied by his beautiful drawings, is a great example. The photograph is also a very important place in his life (nude photographs, photographs of Africa). Great graphic, Corneille also creates lithographs, aquagravures, engravings, as well as sculptures (ceramic, bronze, resin, glass), jewelry artist, dishes made of Limoges porcelain, tapestries, and so on, making it accessible to more his works. Great innovator, he is one of the first artists to create works for the promotion of a bank (ABN AMRO, the Netherlands) or organization (Greenpeace Netherlands). Eager to experiment, always kept a playful child, he projects his drawings on pens, cars, a balloon, ties, and even a tram in Amsterdam. In the words so beautifully his wife, Natasha van Beverloo-Corneille, inspired by the famous phrase of A. Rimbaud, “Cornelius is an eternal traveler, a man with soles of wind with one foot still in the sandbox, a young great artist.”

Cornelius has always been a free bird. He never stays long in one place. Crow, the bird was traveling around the world: Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Mexico, Brazil, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, China, Japan, Israel, USA, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, etc. Each trip is an opportunity to meet new people, new inspirations. In 1995, he moved with his family, however, in the region of Val d’Oise in Villiers-Adam, where he still lives today. In light of this region has always attracted famous painters. From his studio in the fields he would not leave for anything, let soak Corneille by light and birdsong. It is considered by many to be the painter of light color “light for a painter, he says, is happiness! ”. Villiers-Adam, just a few miles of Auvers-sur-Oise, he keeps close to his compatriot Van Gogh which he has always been an admirer.

Although we can see a continuity in its work since its inception to the present, the work of Corneille is composed of several distinct periods of each other: the period of youth until 1947 when the portrait was important, the period “COBRA” from 1948 to 1951, very imaginative with strange characters and a colorful bestiary, the “post-COBRA” often described as the period of lyrical abstraction from 1951 to 1955, and the period of mineralogical 1955 to 1965, he calls himself “geological”, where the compositions and shapes reminiscent of the Hoggar desert. Michel Ragon speaks of “abstract landscape” figurative period from 1970 when women, birds and snakes intermingle. There are indeed in the works of Corneille the main themes of the Woman (painting “Reflection in the mirror,” 1980), Bird (painting “The Big Bird”, 1950), Cat (painting “Women in cat “, 1982) as well as those of the Stars (lithograph” the sun and the bird “-1999), Music (aquagravure” Homage to Mozart “) and Nature (painting “La Mer is a garden “, 1959 ). His favorite themes are expressed alone or in dialogue with one or more of these themes. We are witnessing a new period 2007-2008 in his work, a synthesis of its different periods, where abstract compositions, “Cornelius color” elements such as woman’s head, the bird, are found together in works always full of poetry. In late 2008, to crown the retrospective “Cornelius, a painter solar Auvers-sur-Oise” and reiterated its commitment to the region, Corneille magnifies Auvers-sur-Oise with the work “The Church of Auvers”. To honor her passion for music and many works created around such composers as Mozart, Beethoven, etc.., The Music Festival of Auvers-sur-Oise invite Corneille as an artist of honor.

For over 70 years, Corneille has ingeniously combined all forms of personal pictorial vocabulary, colorful and captivating. His work is a call to dream and freedom.Sunday, September 5, 2010, the bird-Corneille is leaving leaving behind a masterful work to pass on to present and future generations.
